Tungate achieve UK first for Paper Kerbside Recyclable Frozen Food Bags!

Following extensive trials and in store assessment, we are delighted to announce the adoption of our TG189 high barrier kerbside recyclable paper laminate for Ocado’s frozen vegetables range.

The material comprises a specially developed long fibre & high strength MG face paper which ensures that the typically higher pack weights and sharp products found in freezer cabinets are well catered for in terms of resistance to tearing and also puncturing. The addition of a high tack inner lock seal extrusion polymer coating gives very high resistance to packs bursting and moisture ingress during the course of the supply chain, something that has hitherto been taken for granted with plastic materials and until now, has not been replicated via paper faced material solutions. 

TG189 is currently classed as UK recyclable kerbside paper stream, whereas all recyclable plastic bags are only classed as “return to larger stores” recyclable.  Finally, TG189 being a predominantly paper based laminate is also not liable for the UK Plastics Tax.  Commenting, Tungate’s Sales Director Gareth Partlett was pleased and relieved that the extensive development phase had been successfully completed; “We were initially quite concerned about potential pack failures throughout the supply chain, particularly during transit. At the end of the day you couldn’t throw any more obstacles in the path of such a paper grade material, eg. high pack weights, very low temperatures plus sharp and wet products. However, with TG189 we were fortunate in already having a potentially suitable specification and it was then just a case of thorough trialling from processing through to transit and in store. Everyone involved are delighted at the result and we now anticipate wider adoption for similar products throughout the UK.”
